Workflow logic is the set of dependency relationships between the individual tasks, which make up a workstream. In other words, the workflow logic is the order or sequence of the tasks in a workstream. As a specific stream of work progresses, it is often necessary to insert a new task between two existing tasks in the Network Manager and to add or remove dependency relationships between the tasks to accurately represent the new flow of work. Any changes of this type are accomplished by “editing the workflow logic” relating to the tasks.

Adding a dependency relationship can mean linking either a new predecessor or a new successor to a specific task in a workstream.

To add a dependency in the Network Manager view complete the steps below.

  1. Open the Network Manager view as shown in Steps 1 – 4 of Insert Milestone / Task.
  1. Select the Milestone / Task you want to add a predecessor or successor by clicking once on its shape. Once selected, the object controls will appear around the shape.
  1. Hover the cursor near the outer edge of the task until the cursor becomes a pointing hand. Click once, hold and drag the cursor to the task you want to create a dependent relationship with. Repeat the process to create any additional dependency relationships, allowing the Network Manager to fully complete rendering the relationship before creating the next relationship.
  1. Alternatively, you can create dependent relationships using Task ID’s. To do this, first, select the Milestone / Task you want to add a predecessor or successor to by clicking once on its shape then click to open the Edit Constraint (Predecessor) Task window. Scroll to Predecessor / Successor detail.
  1. Click the + Add to the right of Predecessor or Successor as applicable for the dependency you wish to create and enter the Task ID in the pop-up as shown below. Then click the Enter / Return key on your keyboard. Repeat the process to create any additional dependency relationships, allowing the Network Manager to fully complete rendering the relationship before creating the next relationship.
